Maria Sigma

London-based Greek Textile Designer and Weaver

‘THESE FABRICS REFLECT ON THEIR ROLE IN RESIDING IN THE EVERYDAY; THEY CREATE A BOUNDARY BETWEEN US AND NATURE, THE CULTURE OF THE BODY AND THE EXTERNAL WORLD. FABRICS CONTRIBUTE IN CREATING A SENSE OF SOMETHING FAMILIAR AND BELOVED.’

Maria Sigma is a textile designer and weaver specialising in 'zero waste' hand-woven pieces for interiors. Maria combines her passion for maths, craftsmanship and her Greek heritage to form vibrant but minimal contemporary textiles. Through emphasising the texture and the raw state of the cloth, and removing any superfluous elements, she produces honest textiles which become timeless heirlooms.

‘Persephone’s Dream’ is a new Collection of throws by Maria Sigma.

‘The new pieces are inspired by the poem ‘Persephone’s Nightmare’. It sets modern Greek environmental issues against Greek mythology: Eleusis is the setting for the most important ancient shrine of Demeter and Persephone, Goddesses associated with Earth’s fertility, and a modern industrial wasteland. In my view, today’s environmental crisis is deeply caused by mass production and fast fashion. By only using natural undyed and fashion waste yarns, I aspire to reconnect with nature and its raw materials and create contemporary work while reinterpreting traditional weaving techniques while embracing a slow-making zero-waste philosophy and practice.’
