Simone ten Hompel

German Metal Artist

“SPOONS ARE THE FIRST TOOLS WE LEARN TO USE & THEY ARE MOST LIKELY THE LAST TOOL WE USE WITH SOME DIGNITY. SPOONS ARE MY KIND OF CANVAS WHERE I CAN EXPRESS THIS ASPECT OF LIFE. ALPHA & OMEGA & ALL THAT HAPPENS IN-BETWEEN.”

Simone ten Hompel’s sees metal as her first language, strongly believing that true understanding of any craft must come through the experience of making. Over an illustrious career, she has earned a reputation as one of the most inventive silversmiths of her generation.

“I think of metal as my first language and then, I speak English and German … I see it as a voice. It is a negotiation between hand, heart, head and material.”

Simone ten Hompel has been working with metal for over 45 years. She's exhibited at the V&A and won the prestigious Jerwood Applied Arts Prize.
