Rowena Brown
British Ceramic Artist based on the Isle of Iona
"I HEW & SCULPT PIECES FROM BLOCKS OF CLAY. ALTHOUGH THEY ARE HOLLOW, A ROBUST WEIGHT & SOLIDITY IS DISPLAYED. I APPLY SLIPS & GLAZES, BY PAINTING & PEELING THEM OFF I REVEAL SURFACE TEXTURES, MARKS & FEATURES. EACH FORM HAS ITS OWN TEMPERAMENT."
Rowena Brown works with heavily pigmented clays to construct evocative sculptural and architectural forms. The house shapes are archetypal. Shown as a group of four, they allude to the dichotomous themes of isolation and community. They exude stillness and diffident solitude. They prompt contemplation and provoke recollection.
