Lizzie Farey
Scottish Basketmaker
‘MY WORK ENGAGES WITH NATURE. I FOCUS ON RECREATING THE ESSENCE OF NATURAL FORM THROUGH THE MEDIUM OF WILLOW, ASH, BIRCH, HAZEL AND OTHER LOCALLY GROWN WOODS. THE RURAL SETTING OF MY HOME AND STUDIO IS MY GUIDING INSPIRATION WHICH CONTINUES TO INFORM AN INTERACTION WITH NATURE THAT IS DEEPLY PERSONAL’
Lizzie Farey’s delicate, intricate structures reflect nature’s own balance between order and chaos. Like complex 3D drawings, these intimate forms allow the viewer to enter the process of creation as our eyes trace the hand and mind of the artist.
Growing her own field of willow and collecting ash, birch, hazel and larch from nearby forests and hedgerows Farey has informed her artistic vernacular through extensive knowledge of her materials and an innate desire to engage with the rhythms of nature. Her complete absorption in her medium and her patient intuitive skill often reveal the fragility of life and the abundance of inner experience. Each work is built up slowly over a period of weeks, contemplative by nature these pieces communicate a sense of calm restoration.
