Fritz Baumann
German Wood Artist
“EACH PIECE IS ADMIRED FOR ITS UNIQUENESS. BAUMANN EMPHASIZES & WELCOMES THE IRREGULARITIES OF THE MATERIAL AT HAND, WORKING WITH THEM, INSTEAD OF AGAINST THEM, WHICH LEADS TO INDIVIDUAL, EXPRESSIVE FINAL SHAPES.”
Trained carpenter and award winning film director Fritz Baumann is passionate about creating exceptional films and exemplary woodwork. Using his favorite wood, the robust oak, Baumann’s stools and bowls are artworks of their own accord. His Japanese inspired works are minimalist studies of nature, which he frees from carefully selected green oak trees. He searches for the hidden features within the trunk that promise the most interesting results.During the long curing process the wood loses its tension, as it bends and warps it will find its very own form. If splits occur, they are fixed with dovetails to make the flaw an eye-catcher and add character and beauty to the design. The structure of the grain is emphasized by tool-marks.
His wooden objects speak a simple design language; they are archaic and modern at the same time and become even more beautiful with use and age.
