Maria Sigma is an award-winning weaver specialising in 'zero waste' ethical hand-woven textiles based in London.

By using exceptionally natural materials my work celebrates a timeless high aesthetic via 'zero waste' design and a slow-making ethic, combining a contemporary approach of traditional weaving techniques and focusing on raw natural materials and texture.

Inspired by nature and my Greek heritage, in combination with a love for maths and craftsmanship I make vibrant but minimal, contemporary textile artworks that creatively interpret long-established traditional craft techniques and styles. By removing any superfluous elements, my work aims at creating high-quality hand-woven textiles designed to become timeless heirlooms.

Maria's workshop will teach you all the basics of weaving, transforming your household waste textiles into masterpieces.

The workshop is a 3-hour class designed to give to students a thorough and intensive grounding in hand-weaving. You will learn foundational weaving skills, such as warping and basic weaving techniques and patterns, and finishing techniques. The aim of the class is to not only cover a range of styles but also encourage the student to develop his/her own distinctive voice as a weaver. You can make a small wall hanging, pieces for a patchwork, a phone case or an abstract artwork, and plenty more. Let your imagination run wild.

A small wooden frame loom, weaving tools and Maria’s newest book 'Weaving: The Art of Sustainable Textile Creation' are included and for you to take home. Materials and yarns will be also provided, but do bring your own textiles/clothes to recycle - tablecloths, bed sheets, pillowcases, and T-shirts.
